Sonoma County Roller Derby Joins Women's Flat Track Derby Association
Rohnert Park, CA —December 21, 2010
Press Release
Sonoma County Roller Derby is proud to announce that it has been accepted as a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), the national governing body for women's amateur flat track roller derby in the U.S.
As a new member of WFTDA, Sonoma County Roller Derby joins the ranks of over 75 all-female, skater owned and operated leagues nationwide that have united to lead the growing sport of women's flat track roller derby. WFTDA member leagues engage in sanctioned interleague play, including regional and national tournaments. D. Enforcer (Mari-Dantia Almeida), current President of Sonoma County Roller Derby notes, "We are proud to be members of WFTDA, because of the opportunity it provides to compete and be ranked regionally and nationally against other highly qualified athletes.”
About the WFTDA
Founded in 2004, WFTDA promotes and fosters the sport of women's flat track derby by facilitating the development of athletic ability, sportswomanship, and goodwill among member leagues. Bearing a governing philosophy of "by the skaters, for the skaters," women skaters are primary owners, managers and operators of each member league and of the association. WFTDA's operational tasks include setting standards for rules, seasons, and safety and determining guidelines for the national and international athletic competitions of member leagues. All member leagues have a voice in the decision-making process, and agree to comply with the governing body's policies. For more information, visit www.wftda.com.
About Sonoma County Roller Derby
The Sonoma County Roller Derby League (SCRD) was founded in 2007 and quickly established a reputation as a competitive force to be reckoned with, as well as an appreciative fan base. Only two years later, SCRD applied for and was accepted into WFTDA’s apprenticeship program. Having now completed the apprenticeship, December 1st, 2010 marks SCRD’s acceptance as a full-fledged WFTDA member league consisting of three competitive teams. The Wine Country Home Wreckers is SCRD’s main traveling team for competing at the regional and national level, while the North Bay Bruisers is the league’s “hometown” team that competes against teams nearby; SCRD’s newest and youngest members belong to a junior derby team for skaters ages 10-17, and will be announcing its name and its first competitive season in 2011.
